    The Sustainable Global Business Enterprise: A Strategic Leadership Role for HR

    Learning Objectives

    Attendees will:

    • Learn about the characteristics, potential benefits and market necessity of developing a sustainable organization;
    • Discuss linkages between a sustainable business model and effective human capital management;
    • Discuss a strategic business leadership role for HR;
    • Discuss profiles of organizations that have successfully embedded sustainable business and HR practices;
    • Identify Sustainable HR Best Practices; and
    • Discuss core competencies required by HR Leadership and HR Practitioners and implications for HR education.

    This session will focus on how and why leading organizations are embracing sustainability as a strategic framework for integrating their businesses, creating innovative solutions and thinking strategically about leading change. This trend provides a strategic opportunity for HR Leaders to be viewed as Business Leaders and drive business growth and success by championing the development and embedding of sustainable HR practices throughout their organizations to support business strategy development and execution. Case studies of leading organizations will be profiled, Best Practices will be shared and required HR competencies and education will be discussed.

    This session is designed to provide a professional development opportunity for HR Leaders and HR Practitioners interested in being viewed as credible business leaders. This will be accomplished by improving knowledge and skills associated with understanding how sustainability can be leveraged to create organizational strategy, create a competitive advantage and drive organizational growth and success.



    Dr. Tom C. Hogan, SPHR, GPHR

    Dr. Hogan is a Professor of Practice in Human Resource Management in the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the Pennsylvania State University. He also serves as a Professor-In-Residence at the Penn State Sustainability Institute. Dr. Hogan’s research and teaching interests include global human resources, global leadership development, business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in-residence and on-line.

    Dr. Hogan has 30 years of experience as a practitioner and has served in leadership and management positions in higher education and the corporate sector. Prior to joining the School, Dr. Hogan held the position of Interim Associate Provost, Office of Faculty Affairs at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Prior to working for UMUC, he spent 23 years with AT&T in a variety of assignments including sales, sales support, business development, marketing and human resources. In his last assignment at AT&T, Dr. Hogan served as Director of Strategic Talent Acquisition and Retention, Workforce Diversity and EEO/AA. Prior to AT&T, he worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

    Dr. Hogan currently serves as a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). In this role, he is involved in developing and representing the U.S. position on global HR standards to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In November 2011, he was elected to represent ANSI as a member of the U.S. Delegation at the first ISO Technical Committee 260 Human Resource Management plenary meeting.

    Dr. Hogan holds a Doctor of Management Degree (DM) from the University of Maryland University College and two Masters Degrees from Penn State University in Public Administration and Regional Planning. He serves on the Penn State Educational Equity Advisory Board and is a faculty adviser for the Society for Human Resource Management Penn State Student Chapter. Dr. Hogan also serves as the Student Chapter Chair of the Human Resource Association of Centre County. Dr. Hogan holds certifications from the HR Certification Institute as Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). 

    This program been approved for 1 (Business) recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.
